Hi, I’m Andrea.

I’m a Toronto-based nutritionist and writer.

I’ve worked in many capacities in the health and wellness industry, from having a nutrition practice to cooking with a vegan chef and writing about nutrition for the natural health supplement and wellness industries.

As a writer, my work has appeared in VegNews, Tonic Magazine and MindBodyGreen. I’ve also been featured in Elle Canada and E! Canada. I’ve written for Weight Watchers Canada and blogged for HuffPost Canada, and I’ve ghostwritten e-books on various health topics in addition to my now-defunct blog, Healthy Delicious.

I recently finished up Heart to Heart, a cookbook with more than 50 heart-healthy recipes.

If the last 10+ years have taught me anything, it’s that it’s more confusing than ever to eat well and do the right thing for your body. So I created Platypus to bring you a new healthy (and mostly) plant-based recipe each week.

I want to inspire you to love cooking healthy food at home.

We all know that eating more vegetables is good for us. Study after study links eating more daily servings of vegetables to lower body weight, more energy, heart health, better moods, a longer health span and overall longevity.

Nowadays, there are a million diets out there. What unites the healthy diets in the world (Mediterranean Diet, Blue Zones and some studies on vegetarians) is plant foods.

In addition to their vitamin and mineral content, plant foods contain thousands of phytochemicals (sometimes referred to as phytonutrients, antioxidants, polyphenols). There is no “perfect” phytonutrient that will solve all our problems. Instead, the key is eating a range of colourful veggies and fruits.

Plant foods are also lower in calories than animal foods. Many longevity scientists have found that a certain element of calorie restriction is good for us!

Yet, despite all these benefits, many of us aren’t getting enough colourful fruits and veggies. The Centres for Disease Control estimates that only 1 in 10 of us are getting “enough.”

No judgement here! Life gets busy, and even when we have time, it can feel like a pain to research new healthy recipes, not to mention how much money it costs to eat this way.

I created Platypus to make eating more plant food simple and fun. I am not telling you to become a vegetarian or vegan (the choice is up to you and depends on so many factors, anyway). I’m here to inspire you to cook and enjoy a broader range of plant foods so you can get out and enjoy more of what the world has to offer… however you eat.

Come along with me as I share a mostly plant-based recipe each Thursday to help you slow down, cook at home, and know that you’re doing something good for your body and mind. I send the recipe out on Thursday so you can shop for ingredients and make it on the weekend, or save it for the next week’s meal prep.

If you are looking for more support, I also work with people 1:1. If you’re interested in chatting further, just send me a note ☺️.
